Connectivity loss / DDOS attack this evening

Post by DeUltimaPunisher »

At approximately 7pm PDT tonight, a large DDOS attack in Seattle proved that NFO's new router isn't up to the task, as the router apparently couldn't handle it and crashed completely. After a much lengthier downtime than we would have liked, NFO's on-site staff has reconnected the old router and brought our equipment back online now. They had to block the customer who was being attacked, and they'll be considering where to go from here; they will likely either have to replace the router with a very expensive piece of equipment, or refund the customer and shut down his service.

It's not that easy with these kind of attacks. Usually fuckers like this like to infect poor randoms with a worm that creates a huge bot-net of computers. The FBI would spend the next couple years trying to figure that one out, and simply don't have the resources to investigate every crime.

It's like when someone breaks into your house... The police show up and take a report, but really their job ends there unless the value of what's lost is substantial enough to justify the cost of investigating and the man hours.

I really doubt keeping America's game servers running is on the top of the list for the FBI's cyber-crime division.
