Thanx! Does anyone recommend a safe quality mod/skin?

I am trying to wade through the info on the internet and learn about DoDS and source in general. In my reading I have come across mods/skins. Are there and do they have mods/skin(ie HiDef) that only effect client side server(if that makes any sense). If terminology is off please correct. Thanks
