How do I make a shared drive show up in a users my computer that they have permissions to using GPO's? I have been messing around for hours trying to get this to work and yet nothing.

I am using a VM of Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory

The client pc's are added to the domain right?

are your client machines win 7 or xp?
I havent messed with 2008 yet. Actually it is my plan in the next couple weeks to run a dc off of it and a small lab envirornment on our esx server using 2008. I will let you know what issues i have.
Can you get to the hidden share from your client PC?

I created NTFS file permissions and securities so i can map the drive and go to it from my windows XP client.

but i am supposed to figure out a way so that when the user logs in, it will automatically show up under my computer like the c:\ drive using GPO's to do so. I have had no luck whatsoever. I have read lots of technet articles and other online resources yet nothing. nothing even in the MOAC 70-640/642/646 books either.

um never make changes to your default domain policy. always create a new one in group policy objects for each thing you want to do or group of things so you can sort them out easier. then you can just link and enforce them as needed.

Remember to do gpupdate /force on server after any gpo changes.

I believe server 2003 you needed to run a script to map a network drive but I see that it is easier in 2008.

I am still waiting for 2008 R2 to download at work. (we have very slow connection). 40KB sec.

also I noticed that gpresult showed the user was a member of Enterprise Admins.

Are you testing the GPO with the same user you created the GPO with?

By default the Owner of the GPO does not have the GPO applied to them, it protects you from screwing yourself.

also, you are using Preferences, which is a CSE not native to windows XP.

You need to install the update for OS to be able to see the setting.

Besides the CSE, make sure you install XMLLite

also if you are using preference - Item level targeting, there are some instances that the GPO will not apply due to a known bug.

I have a hotfix if that is the issue which is not applied via windowsupdate.

I believe your current problem is far more simple.

Only complex filters cause the GPO to fail with item level.
