Firmware updates now allows this device to Rip your "genuine owned copy" of your Wii games to an external connected HDD, then play the games off the HDD. No softmodding or hard modding of your Wii. You will need to open your Wii however and insert a by-pass board (no solder/wii changes). Pretty Damn Clever !
I prefer homebrewing mine, because you also get access to all the other apps, like being able to stream media onto it. Also, you don't have to open the Wii's case. I've had a 250GB HD hooked up for over a year. It even improves load times in some cases (sometimes not at all).
Un-homebrewing the Wii is basically as simple as deleting any apps you installed in the Homebrew channel and then just doing a factory system reset on the Wii to clear up anything left over. And then formatting the SDcard. It'd fool Nintendo unless they started inspecting things like the bootloaders.
