Okay...new problem with laptop.

Post by CMDRRABB »

My rig is about 3.5 yrs old and it just started my fan noises. Gonzo said check you tube for fan replacement. Found several screws holding the bottom on were loose, so I tightened them. Sound went away. Now when I play DoD the noise starts up again. When I log out and go into the internet, no noise. Any idea's on what it could be?

Rig: Fujitsu Lifebook N6410
T2300 processor Duo core
x1400 ATI video
2 GB ram
320 HDD (western digital 2 x 160's)

I really hate to take it in, but I probably should, other than canned air, I really haven't taken it apart to clean out.

This is why I don't buy laptops for gaming, it's hard or impossible to swap components if you want to troubleshoot it.

Try to lower your graphics option both for windows, graphics card/onboard, and in DOD.
set them to low or performance, that way your cpu and gpu won't get hot and so your fan will not be that excited :)

Or if you can afford it buy a desktop instead.

Thanks. I do have a desktop I built, but it's in Seattle in storage while I'm down here in Chicago. I think it's a bearing. It seems to come and go. I'll try toning down the settings and see if that helps any. Worst comes to worst, I'll be gone for a week camping in May and maybe I'll just drop it off to get a tune up.

Fans have bearings in them. mostly platic some have metal. after a while they will get worn out. This causes the fan to make noise. When you demand more power out of your laptop, i.e. playing games, the fans rev up to control airflow. so when you are in game your graphics are working harder and you fan speeds up. If your bearings are worn they will make noise. Then once you close game and no longer need the cooling i.e. browsing the Internet, the fan will slow back down. This is most likely the reason for the noise.
You should be able to find a fan online someplace and replace it. You may have to crack open your laptop to do this. Be careful.
It may be your drive grinding to. I would keep an ear out for that. when it revs up stick your ear to the drive and listen for a grinding noise.

Here's what you do: Put laptop in a tub of water then put in freezer overnight. In the morning go down to fry's and buy a new laptop. Oh yeah and use your old laptop in your cooler when you go camping.
