Post by DeUltimaPunisher »

With the NHL season starting to warm up, I wanted to know if there was any interest in starting up a Blitz Hockey Pool this year.

Yessssss.

Though I never do well at hockey pools, the players I choose ALWAYS end up getting injured.

I curse them well.

Well it's actually a Canadian, American, Russian, Czech, Swedish, Finish, Slovakian, Swiss & Belorussian pass time that Canada started.

There are technically more Americans who love hockey than Canadians. There is just more fans here per capita than the USA.

America may own the NHL, but we shall always own Hockey in our hearts.

America is all one big melting pot anyway, are ancestors are all originally from somewhere else. I like that the NHL is full of Europeans and Canadians. (for some reason Canadians are not Americans. I have never really inderstood this.)

I Freaking Love Hockey. Playing and Watching. Alaska is sort of more like Canada with our Hockey anyway. I wish we were big enough to support an NHL team. I will have to settle for Dallas though, because I spend alot of time there. I always gota pull for Scotty Gomez, hes a local boy.

Ice Hockey ? WTF ? LOL

Look for the tiny two BLUE blobs on this map of Australia. Up to ~12 weeks a year (sometimes we get NO season) you can go to snowfields in these areas and ski. Generally with the help of snowmaking machines to ensure enough cover on the summits to ski ! Cross-country is a bit easier.

More often than not the interior of Australia is either farmland or this:

LOL !!! Good luck with that Ice hockey shit ! ;)

I will give you the Short history:

Well it really started with this thing called the "American Revolutionary War" where Americans raised arms against the British Empire and succeeded to become their own Independent nation. But, up here we kind of liked being part of the United Kingdom and never separated.

WW1 is where we technically became a recognized nation on the world stage, and WW2 was the first war that Canada was allowed, to join and fight on it's own (We declared war a couple days after the UK, to make a point).

It wasn't technically until 1982 that Canada became a full and independent nation from the UK, where through the efforts of our debatably loved Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (equal to United States Constitution) was finally born, and freeing us from British law and rule. The Queen is nothing more than a figure head to us now, with no real power.

List of differences:

Americans are more obese than Canada
Canadians are a lot nicer and smarter.
Canadians call their $1 a loonie and a $2 a toonie
Canada has a better economy
USA has states , Canada has provinces and territories.
Canada is obsessed with hockey. USA is obsesses with basketball, baseball and football.
Canadians will say "eh" after every freakin sentence.
Canada has a prime minister not president
Canada is the most peaceful country. they are known as peacekeepers.
America needs to have a war with every country
Canadians love beer.
America has made many fast food restaurants.(mcdonalds, kfc etc)
Americans pronounce it "zee" Canadians pronounce it "zed"
Canada created basketball and hockey
Canadians have a highway not freeway
Canadians spell it laboUr, honoUr, coloUr (with a "u")
its colder in Canada
Canadians are in grade 12 not in the 12th grade
Canadians go overseas and try to insist that they are not American when people hear their accent.
everything is labeled in french and English in Canada
in Canada milk comes in plastic carton not glass jugs
Canadians drink pop, Americans drink soda
CANADA IS THE SECOND LARGEST LAND MASS AND THE BEST PART OF NORTH AMERICA!!

I hope that clears up why Canadians are not Americans for ya brother... :flags-canada:

I know Ice Hockey is really not the most popular sport Down Under, but you should know there actually is a large fan base. And Australia is hosting the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Championships next year.

You guys even have a little mini Australian version of the NHL called Ice Hockey Australia (IHA) Check out their site here http://www.iha.org.au Melbourne actually won the championship this year FYI.

All I'm saying brother is give it a chance, you just might like it. It could actually be an interesting way to keep cool and be entertained in that blistering hot environment you guys have there.

FUCK GOMEZ!!!! guy is not a hockey player...all he does is get into players heads, skate around on the ice, and maybe once in a blue moon he'll get a goal. fucking hate that guy...that being said...pretty much his only role is to piss players off, so he does a good job at that!

Americans are more obese than Canada------ Not if you include your heads.
Canadians are a lot nicer and smarter.----------could agree. But we are crippled by the southern states.
Canadians call their $1 a loonie and a $2 a toonie---American call their cartoons that
Canada has a better economy--------is that why even when our economy is down our currency holds more value?
USA has States , Canada has provinces and territories.----hence the United States
Canada is obsessed with hockey. USA is obsesses with basketball, baseball and football.---you forgot food and pussy
Canadians will say "eh" after every freakin sentence.------we burp and fart after ours
Canada has a prime minister not president-------not much difference.
Canada is the most peaceful country. They are known as peacekeepers.----Americans call peacekeepers pussies
America needs to have a war with every country-----not every....just most.
Canadians love beer.------like wise
America has made many fast food restaurants. (mcdonalds, kfc etc---you have fast food too. don't act like you don’t....Harvey's..it's not fast food restaurants that make us fat. It’s the people that go there every day.
Americans pronounce it "zee" Canadians pronounce it "zed"---wtf are you talking about?
Canada created basketball and hockey---False, basketball invented by James Naismith, Canadian born but invented while at Springfield, Massachusetts in in the US. Also Lacrosse was invented in the US
Canadians have a highway not freeway-----we have both. Interstates are called freeways and highways are like freeways but have lights instead of on and exit ramps.
Canadians spell it laboUr, honoUr, coloUr (with a "u")----true
Its colder in Canada.--- Keep it
Canadians are in grade 12 not in the 12th grade----semantics

In Canada milk comes in plastic carton not glass jugs-----where the fuck have you seen milk in glass over here. Mostly comes in plastic cartons.
Canadians drink pop, Americans drink soda.----I drink pop not soda!!!!!
CANADA IS THE SECOND LARGEST LAND MASS AND THE BEST PART OF NORTH AMERICA!!------- Most of your population is near our border and most of your land is inhabitable.

Mongo you fucking smart-ass you! I actually got the list from some website, so don't criticize me for all of it LMFAO.

And a Zee is the Letter "Z" you fucking doorknobs, We say Zed up here, not Zee.

As for the milk thing, I think it refers to the way American's say it rather than what you use. I have heard Americans say jug of milk or milk jug in the past. I have never heard a Canadian refer to it as a Jug.

And Couger, I could never pass as an American; I'm not ignorant like you. :obscene-birdiedoublered:

I always refer to it a a carton of milk. Maybe in the snobby suburbs they call it jugs since they used to get jugs of milk delivered to their doorsteps....back in the 50's.
A jug of milk is when we refer to a womans breasts. LOL

LOL, Let's not cry over spilled milk

I did want to comment on your economy attack though:
Mongo wrote:Canada has a better economy--------is that why even when our economy is down our currency holds more value?
Actually before your economic crash down there, are dollar was at about 80-90 cents to the US dollar. Your little downfall actually did fire the Canadian currency above your dollar, where it hovered above your dollar for a good couple months. Today your currency is starting to recover, but our dollar is still holding pretty much at par with the US dollar.

I would also like to point out that our housing market here is doing just fine and dandy. Your economical downfall didn't effect us that much at all. Before the crash the average house in Vancouver went for around $500,000 and today are selling well above $600,000 on average. All across our nation the average price of a home has increased, where as down the in States the average price of a home has dropped dramatically.

Now I don't have all the numbers in front of me, because I don't really care. But I just wanted you to know, that your comment is kinda false.

housing prices drop due to a surplus of houses being built. Just means more people aren't moving so that those that are have the power over the marker. Just a buyers market right now, which will go back to a sellers market. always gonna have that swing.

Well the point was more to do with the fact that our dollar did surpass the US dollar for a period of a couple months. Mongo commented that it didn't, but when such an event like that takes place, and hasn't happened since the 70's. It makes the news here big time, so it's information that every Canadian knows, but not something an American would really notice unless he really pays attention.

But on the housing side of things, I would like to make a couple notes on that. Vancouver has a huge surplus of housing; in fact it is estimated that 1/3 of all new homes built are bought solely as investment property. No one even lives in them, yet the prices here still continue to climb, the economic downturn taking very little effect on this progress at all. So your claim has no validity in our market at all right now.

And the simple fact is: The reason you guys have such a huge surplus of homes in the states right now, is because of all the BS defaulted loans, and people are having their homes stolen from them due to your "economic crash" The housing market in the US, is not in one of these little swings you are claiming. Your situation is a "Housing Crash" as described by your own media, and ours alike. Not only are you in a Housing Crash, but it is still continuing and estimated to last for years to come. This is not some little market anonymity that will clear up soon.

Here in Canada, we had laws to prevent such loans from ever being handed out in the first place. Our government understood that they were noting more than a sophisticated scam, and quickly made laws to protect us from the very event you are now experiencing. This protection saved our asses from falling into the same hole as the rest of the world. Canada is one of the few countries in world that didn't lose a single bank, or experience a total economic crash.

Really the only way we have been effected, is that you guys are now too poor to buy products and services. But don't worry, we found new customers like China. FYI

Kind of off subject but since this is going toward this topic.

A lot of people don’t understand the effects banks have on the economy when they loan to people who shouldn't have them.

1) Credit cards: Providian started it when they gave cards to at risk consumers and jacked their interest rates to 20%+. Look at it this way. And this is a crude example but it makes my point. Someone gets a card with a 500 dollar limit. They max it out and pay 20% interest rate. Let’s say they only have 300 dollars of disposable income every month. So instead of that 300 going towards goods and services (our economy) a chunk of it go to the credit card company. Then the next month more goes to the card and less into the economy. This happens over and over with people who shouldn’t have cards. So they end up paying 3-5 times in interest charges and fees. That is 500-2500 dollars per person that doesn’t go into the economy. It goes to the banks. Now multiply that by tens of millions of times and you get a recession.

2) Home loans: people who shouldn't have qualified for a loan got them. And yes there were regulations in place to stop them but the pay offs of regulators and deregulation (by repubs again) in the mid 2000's screwed that up. So these people got tricked to get adjustable rate mortgages due to either their stupidity or gullibility. They start to balloon and now they can't afford them. It is profitable for banks to foreclose on some loans. Just not a lot. This actually hurt them because the market died down and they couldn't flip those foreclosures. Banks also sell the mortgages to investors for even more of a profit. This is actually disclosed in your mortgage paperwork. So it shouldn't be a surprise.

3) Banks handled this poorly. Ethically they should have transferred all those balloon payments to a fixed rate. They could have added a 1% rate to those and it would still have helped people and they would have made more money than lost. People also screwed up by not making payments when they lost home values. Homes are long term investments. Ask your parents how much they paid for their home. Hell, ask anyone who bought a house 15+ years ago and what it is valued now.

4) Now I am going to attack consumers: I hear people bitching about Wal-Mart all the time. Fact is that there is a reason they sell at a lower price. Yes they get most of their goods in china. They mastered many aspects of organization proficiency. They find or in some cases demand the lowest price possible from manufactures. This did hurt American companies. But it is the consumers that did it. We are all to blame. Until we decide that paying a little more for a product that is made here is better than buying items from another country. There are some solutions. If you don’t “NEED” it, do not buy it. If it is something that American companies do not make, find alternatives. Create the demand for it to be made in the US. If an American company doesn’t make a sprocket but people want one made here then consumers can create a demand for that here. Even if there is a competitor, we can bring the companies back here. We still make necessities. Food, cloths, etc. Look online for products that are made in the USA. And yes Canada you will also benefit from USA made products, so buy them. It is a hard process to do but all we need to do is change our spending habits. Help American companies create jobs and stop complaining to the government about getting us jobs (damn libs). It is the consumers that can fix this not them.
