Re: My new build
I am a AMD fan, my last AMD system kicked ass. So I stuck with the same.
Have thought about flashing to 6970. However, I don't see the point. The card will handle anything you throw at it as is.
About $1200. I got rebates back, and some of the items were on sale (lower than they are priced now on Newegg).

Re: My new build
For shits and gigs, I flashed my card to 6970.
Gave me a bit of trouble, and I had to manually do it through command prompt.
Anyway, here are the results via GPU-Z.

Re: My new build
Did you flash with the 6970 bios or unlock the extra cores. The 6970 memory have different timing and voltages. I have the asus 6950 and I got random blue dots on anything that was dark using the 6970 bios. I just used my stock bios and unlock the cores and overclocked to the 6970 speed. Some people have burned up there cards using the 6970 bios. Curently my card is at 900/1450 at 1.13v the max I have ran stable is 962/1554 at 1.175v.

Flashed to 6970 BIOS.
The core clock of 880mhz began to produce instability for me last night. Crashed several games. Backed it off to 850mhz, so far so good.

Re: My new build
Its more to do with the 6970 bios you should flash back to stock then use techpower radeon bios editor to unlock the cores. All you do is load your stock bios then click on additional features tab then on the middle right click the 6970 shader count and save as a new bios and flash it to the card. Then over clock to the 6970 speeds and you should be good.
Let me know if you want help I don't want to see your new video card end up being a paper weight.
Also make sure ati overdrive is set to +20% or you won't get enough power to the card.

Re: My new build
Ok, I did what you recommended. Switched back to original BIOS, ran BIOS editor, unlocked the shaders, saved BIOS, and flashed it.
The 6970 BIOS became unstable for me. Was crashing my games even at stock 800mhz.
Now that I have gone back to old, and unlocked the shaders.... how do I overclock the card?
Through CCC Overdrive? or another method?

Re: My new build
If xfx didn't provide a application for overclocking then use msi afterburner or asus smart doctor.
I run my at 900 / 1450 at 1.14v and remember in ati performance tab (amd over drive) set power control setting to +20%.
I use asus smart doctor as it came with my card.
