Broadcasting council rules Dire Straits tune too offensive for radio
Money For Nothing, a classic-rock radio staple by Dire Straits, is too offensive for Canadian broadcasts because of its use of the word "faggot," the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has ruled.
Offending Lyrics from Money for Nothing, by Dire Straits:
The little faggot with the earring and the makeup
Yeah, buddy, that's his own hair
That little faggot's got his own jet airplane
That little faggot, he's a millionaire
This song was written in 1985. It won and/or was nominated for several MTV awards, an American music award, and a Grammy. The video for the song was the first one ever shown on the British MTV network.
Since edited versions exist, such as one that replaces the offending term with "mother,"...
And really, is the word "mother" appropriate either? "The little mother (fucker) with the earring and the makeup" is what I think of hearing it that way. I'm assuming that mother is just the shortened form of motherfucker in this case.
I live near Canada and get more Canadian radio than U.S. Just earlier I heard a station play Ironic by Alanis Morissette. She said the word "shit" and it wasn't bleeped out. They also played a Nickelback song that had the word "fuck" in it plain as day. And this was around 7 P.M. when kids are still up and can listen to the radio.
Can someone tell me what the point was in deciding to single out this one song? Is there a list of more that are going to be fucked with soon too? I see no sense in this.
Is rap allowed in Canada?
Maybe someone dusted the weed up there with PCP or something.

Who gives a fucking shit? It's not like people can't still buy/download the album if they want to hear their precious garbage rap.
I personally agree that such words have no place on a public radio station. It may have been okay in 1985, but now a days we are trying to end this normality of gay bashing in today's society. That starts with the media that influences these young minds in the first place.
People are born gay, it's not a choice. It's no different than allowing a white man to be dropping N<BOMB>s in his raps. He would be fucking crucified for it, so why is it okay for a strait man to be spitting out this nonsense? There is simply no place for it in a "PUBLIC" setting!

Any word that's offensive to anyone is equally an 'offensive term', in my opinion. Unless you want to start trying to rate the offensiveness of certain terms over others based on how many people find them offensive, or how many people find them unoffensive. Even if that was possible, I doubt it would be accurate. Everything is offensive! I choose to not be offended by words, but by meanings, and even then it's hard to offend me. 'Choose' isn't the best word since being offended is emotional and kinda hard to control, but I did make the decision in a manner of speaking. It's definitely nice to not have any button that is really easy for some asshole to push.
Sorry, but I'd find you a hypocrite if you think it's 'just wrong' to use certain terms but it's perfectly cool to say 'retard' or, hell, even the word 'stupid'. Some people are born lacking in intelligence and it's not a choice. Yet it's perfectly normal to use that word? But not other equally offensive terms? Come on.. It's only because people say it all the time and it's become 'popular speech'.
How many people out there are extremely offended at being called stupid? I knew a couple in high school, especially people born retarded or with a speech impediment. But there's pretty much no hope for getting that word to disappear. Although only some contexts of that word are 'offensive', the particularly offensive context of it isn't taboo at all. It's only taboo to say it to someone who really is retarded. It seems like every word has it's own senseless set of rules, and everyone wants to pick and choose their own. Would be nice if humans could just be chill and nice to each other and we wouldn't have to make all these stupid rules. :p

Dire Straits isn't rap. It's classic rock - 25 years old. And a very popular and award winning classic rock song too as I pointed out in my original post. My question about rap was about whether rap is allowed in Canada or not because a lot of rap is way worse than this song is. I don't get any Canadian rap radio here so I was just wondering if there were any rap radio stations.
In reality, this song isn't bashing gays. It appears that the subject is envious of the gay guy being a millionaire. And it's only a brief mention, not the subject of the song. If a gay person finds a song about a man and woman falling in love and living happily ever after offensive, is Canada going to ban that too? The point of my original post is the questioning how far will this go?
Might as well ban White Christmas too. It sounds somewhat racist to me. I think I'll complain to the Canadian government so they ban that song too.
See how silly that White Christmas comment I made sounded? That was the same opinion I had when I heard that a law was made to ban a song just because ONE person found it offensive. There are a lot of other problems going on in the world that need more attention from the governments than this.
Here in the U.S. many schools have banned classic books such as Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Wuthering Heights because of a certain "n" word being used in them. Those stories were describing the people and their lifestyles and language use back in the days that they represent. Many are up in arms about people wanting to "convert" these classics to more modern times. Mark Twain and Emily Brontë would roll over in their graves if they knew what people were wanting to do with their classic writings and Mark Knopfler (the lead singer of The Dire Straits) reportedly isn't too happy that people are being so uptight about a 25 year old song and stated that the lyrics weren't meant to bash gays and doesn't see what all of the fuss is about.
Mark Knopfler's brother David, who co-wrote the song and is a member of the band, is gay. Irony?
And BTW, legally in Canada you can no longer purchase the unedited album with this song and iTunes has also blocked the unedited version to Canadian users so any other form of downloading the original version of this song is probably illegal in Canada too.
One persons bitching shouldn't be the basis of a law that affects everyone else's freedom of choice. If you don't like hearing the song, change the damn radio station.

Well, we pretty much have a socialist democratic government lol.
Even our liquor is controlled by the BC government! (Though we do have private liquor stores, they can only sell certain things)
